A local man was jailed Monday following a single vehicle accident that left two children injured.
According to a Trigg County Sheriff's Office citation, James Wesley Mathis, 35, of Cadiz was traveling north about 5 p.m. Monday on Highway 139, otherwise known as South Road, when his vehicle ran off the road, hit an embankment and overturned. Witnesses to the incident alleged Mathis ran from the vehicle into the woods before returning to the scene of the accident.
Deputies reported smelling alcohol on Mathis upon questioning at the scene. A small bag of marijuana was allegedly located in the woods where witnesses reported Mathis to have fled prior to first responders' arrival.
Deputies questioned Mathis at the scene when it was discovered two children, ages 1 and 3, were still in the vehicle. Rescuers removed the children and all three were taken to Trigg County Hospital. The 3-year-old was treated and released; the 1-year-old was moved to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., for treatment of a possible skull fracture.
He is charged with two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, aggravated DUI and tampering with physical evidence. He is housed in Christian County Jail.
