City votes to offer three-year economic incentive package to Little Caeser's

Thursday, March 16, 2017 - Updated: 11:12 AM

Cadiz could soon find itself home to a new popular pizza chain.

Cadiz City Council voted 4-2 on Wednesday to extend a proposed three-year economic incentive package to Jag's Enterprises of Princeton to locate a new Little Caeser's in city limits. Councilwomen Susan Bryant and Susie Hendricks opposed the measure.

The proposal is a counter-offer to a request filed by Jag's Enterprises — owned by Bryan Jaggers — asking the council to consider refunding two-thirds of the restaurant's payroll taxes and the occupational license fees for a 10-year period. Bryant and Hendricks both cited lack of assistance for existing businesses as the reason for her vote against the package.

"I think it's to their advantage to come, but I think they're going to come here with or without our help," Hendricks said. "... I don't have a good feeling about turning around and giving them money when we never give Susan Henry at the Cadiz Restaurant. You know, she has got a booming business, as I would say, you know and other places like that, small restaurants. We're not giving them any kind of incentive."

Councilman Brian Futrell said while he didn't support a 10-year agreement, he felt that facilitating growth in Cadiz outweighed any objections he might have.

"My thing is, anything that wants to come to Cadiz, I don't want to be the reason they leave," Futrell said. "I know our citizens want more restaurants; they want more businesses. So, I think in general we've got to do something to try and help them out. ... The city doesn't have a lot of growth. It's our job to help promote it."

City attorney Allen Wilson said he would draft an economic incentive agreement to review with Jag's attorney on the city's proposal.
