A Dawson Springs man was killed Sunday when police say he crossed into the path of oncoming traffic at the intersection of South Road and Highway 68/80 in Cadiz.
According to a Kentucky State Police news release, Joseph L. Cotton, 43, of Dawson Springs, was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger about 4 p.m. north on Highway 139 when he attempted to cross Hwy. 68 and failed to yield the right-of-way to Dustin B. Francis, 28, of Murray, who was traveling west in a 2002 Toyota Highlander.
The vehicles collided at the intersection. Police say Cotton was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
Both men were taken to Trigg County Hospital for treatment. Francis was released with minor injuries.
Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson pronounced Cotton dead about 4:45 p.m. at the hospital.
Police reports allege Cotton may have been under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Trigg County Sheriff's Office, Cadiz Police Department, Trigg County EMS and Trigg County Rescue Squad assisted KSP on scene.
