Tuesday night in postseason play, boys basketball fans may have seen the greatest seven minutes of Fifth District action this season.

Lyon County and host Trigg County remained tied 35-35 after three quarters of play in the opening round of the tournament. There would be three lead changes throughout the quarter, starting with a basket by Hayden Murphy. Seconds later, Devron Triplet hit a bucket to tie the game at 37. Murphy fouled out less than 2 minutes after giving Lyon County the lead, allowing the Wildcats back into the contest as Cameron Jordan hit 2-of-2 free throws.

Over the next 1:30 minutes, Trigg County extended their advantage to 43-37 before Josh Mincey and Gabe Board answered back for the Lyons with a pair of buckets.

Jordan was sent to the line again with 3:33 minutes remaining, hitting a pair of free throws. Baskets by Mincey and Nick Gilbert forced the second tie of the quarter, 45-all.

Continuing to add Trigg’s points from the stripe, Jordan hit 1-of-2 free throws with 2:32 remaining to regain the lead.

But through the final stretch, Lyon County leaned on the cool-headed demeanor of seniors Jack Rooyakkers and Mincey to pull ahead for the win.

With 2:22 remaining, Rooyakkers hit a basket for the lead. Max Wadlington followed up inside the 2-minute mark with 2-of-2 free throws as Lyon County led 49-46. Rooyakkers went 5-for-6 from the  stripe to go along with a Mincey bucket to build the lead. Gabe Board put the final nail in the coffin with a point from the free throw line with 6 seconds remaining.

Lyon County took the win 57-51.

With the loss, the Wildcats remain winless against Fifth District opponents this year.
